Khetaram’s twenty-kilometre route.
The feature begins with a vivid image: footprints in sand, a heavy mailbag, and a lone worker connecting remote settlements with the rest of the country.
Somarad to the far-flung dhaanis.
Khetaram is the sole postman of Somarad Branch Post Office in Rajasthan. The village is about 2.5 km from the Indo-Pakistan border, 120 km beyond the last railhead at Barmer, and beyond roads and phone networks.
Mail across sand and heat.
Mail travels from Jodhpur to Barmer and then reaches Khetaram. He carries it across sand beds and dunes, often covering about 20 km for a single delivery.
Desert weather is an obstacle.
His mailbag can weigh up to 28 kilos. Temperatures may cross 50°C, scorching winds and sandstorms cover his khaki uniform, and water is too precious to waste on washing.
Gramin Dak Sewak.
Since 2001, rural delivery agents like Khetaram have been recognised as Gramin Dak Sewaks. More than three lakh GDS workers serve remote places, including Ladakh, Lakshadweep, and riverine communities of the northeast.
Letters, replies, and money orders.
Khetaram reads letters aloud and writes replies in his slightly shaky hand. Money orders help families survive in arid areas, and rural depositors entrust their savings to local post offices.
India Post reaches everyone.
After independence, India Post’s mandate expanded from administrative mail to bringing the entire population within the mailing ambit. The network grew from about 25,000 post offices in 1947 to more than a lakh and a half.
